"PIECE
OF MIND" Gill Ward
Gill Ward is certainly adventurous in her approach to making albums. Her
latest CD, cleverly titled, 'Piece of Mind', flows along, yet has a cynical
edge. Collaborations with composer Simon Balkham, with whom Gill has worked
previously, include the tango inspired, 'Poisoned Kiss'. And she slots in
a couple of self-penned items. One of these, called, 'Life's A Bitch', is
a madrigal type acapella number. Our own Brian Shaw is another featured
songwriter. On his quirky offering, 'Tomato Ketchup' Gill has (if you'll
forgive the pun) the bottle to squeeze every ounce out of the innuendos in
Brian's song. Recorded in the UK and the USA, this CD benefits from the skilled
touch of award winning producer, Dave Cooke. The fabulous line-up of musicians
- among them, James Pearson, Alec Dankworth, Jim Mullen and Digby Fairweather
- are perfectly in sync. with what the material requires. And track 6, 'Just
Doodling', has a fun ending, which musicians will definitely appreciate.
What we have here in essence, is a tasteful, expert and sophisticated album,
which also has that spark of originality. What next, I wonder? I remember
hearing Gill sing 'In My Life', once at Tatty's. I found her reading of that
particular song incredibly moving, because she brought understanding, warmth
and heart to the lyric. More of the same, please!
